Consequently, his work was both criticised and celebrated for his overt scatological tendencies and it’s unapologetically pornographic inclinations. Crumb, who was inspired by the use of psychedelics and cartoons from the 1920s and 1930s, never shied away from controversial topics. The Comix Movement was defined by small press and socially relevant, satirical content which was forbidden from mainstream publication by the Comics Code Authority because of its often explicit depictions of drug use, sexuality and violence. Three years in, he met Harvey Kurtzman who became a pseudo-mentor when Crumb joined the staff roster at Kurtzman’s short-lived satirical magazine Help! There, Crumb first put into print libido-addled Fritz the Cat, his highly controversial yet iconic anamorphic creation who was immortalised in the 1972 X-rated, feature length animation produced by Ralph Bakshi (an animation that Crumb hated so much that he killed Fritz off in the pages of The People’s Comics).ĭuring this time, he began to contribute to numerous, subversive publications, and in 1967 moved to San Francisco where he founded the first successful underground Comix publication, Zap Comix. With the help of his brother Charles, he began producing comic books in highschool, and upon graduation in 1961 he moved to Cleveland where he found work for The American Greeting Card Company. Due to his salacious artwork and inflammatory rhetoric, he is often referred to as “the bad boy” of the comic world. Romantic, nostalgic, sexual and satirical, he was influenced by contemporary American culture, the folk traditions of the 19th and 20th centuries, and early cartoonists such as Carl Banks ( Disney) and Harvey Kurtzman ( Mad, 1954–56 and Help!, 1960–65). Known as the creator of well known characters ‘Fritz the Cat’ and ‘Mr. Crumb, he is known for his distinctive style and excellent storytelling.
